What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy involves two or more family members meeting with a therapist to address issues affecting the family unit. Rather than focusing on one person as "the problem," therapy explores how patterns of interaction, stress, and communication contribute to difficulties — and how the family can change together. Sessions may include all members or different combinations depending on the concern and age of children involved.

Who It Helps & Common Reasons to Seek Support

Family therapy can help when stress, conflict, or behavioral concerns are affecting multiple people at home.

Common reasons families seek support include:

  • Parent-child conflict or difficulty with boundaries and discipline
  • Sibling rivalry or tension between family members
  • Behavioral or emotional concerns in a child or teen
  • Blended family adjustment and co-parenting challenges
  • Major transitions such as divorce, loss, or relocation
  • Communication breakdowns or feeling "stuck" in negative cycles
  • Supporting a family member through mental health or substance use concerns

Our Approach

Our family therapists use systemic, strengths-based approaches tailored to your family's structure and goals. Therapy may include:

  • Mapping family patterns and identifying what keeps problems going
  • Improving communication and problem-solving skills
  • Parent coaching and collaborative behavior planning
  • Supporting each member's perspective while working toward shared goals
  • Coordinating with individual therapists or schools when helpful (with consent)
