What to Expect

Starting therapy is a big step, and it's normal to wonder what happens next. At Newtown Family Therapy, we've designed a clear, supportive process so you know what to expect — from your first request through a free consultation and your first session.

Whether you reach out online or by phone, the path is the same: we listen, we match you with the right therapist, and we give you space to decide if it feels like a good fit before you begin ongoing care.

How Getting Started Works

Here's the step-by-step process for new clients at Newtown Family Therapy:

1. Reach out
Submit our short appointment request form or call us at 203.304.9977. Share basic contact information, what you're looking for, and your general availability. You can also leave a voicemail — we'll return your call.

2. We review and match you
Our team reviews your request and identifies the therapist best suited to your needs, preferences, and schedule. We aim to respond within 1–2 business days.

3. Free 15-minute consultation
We email you with information about your matched therapist and schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation. You'll receive a calendar invite, and your therapist will call you at the scheduled time. This is a chance to ask questions and see if it feels like a good fit — there's no pressure to move forward.

4. First session and onboarding
If you and your therapist agree it's a good fit, your therapist schedules your first full therapy session and sends onboarding information — including portal login and forms to complete before your appointment.

Your Free 15-Minute Consultation

The consultation is a brief phone conversation — not a full therapy session. It's designed to help you and your therapist get a sense of whether working together feels right. During the call, you might talk about:

  • What brought you to therapy
  • What you're hoping to get from support
  • Your therapist's approach and areas of focus
  • Scheduling, location (in-person or telehealth), and practical next steps

You don't need to prepare anything special. Come as you are, ask any questions you have, and take your time deciding. If it doesn't feel like the right match, our team can help you explore other options.

Your First Therapy Session

Your first full session is usually about getting to know each other and building a foundation for ongoing work.

Every therapist and client is different, but you can generally expect:

  • A welcoming, confidential space — in our Newtown office or via secure telehealth
  • Conversation about what brought you in and what you'd like to work on
  • Questions about your history, current challenges, and goals (at a pace that feels comfortable)
  • Discussion of how therapy works, including session length, frequency, and what ongoing care may look like
  • Time for your questions about the process, policies, or anything else on your mind

You won't be expected to share everything at once. Your therapist will guide the conversation and respect your pace. Therapy is a collaborative process — you are an active partner in your care.

Please note: Therapy can bring up difficult feelings, and progress looks different for everyone. We can't guarantee specific outcomes, but we are committed to providing thoughtful, ethical care tailored to your needs.

Confidentiality & Professional Boundaries

What you share in therapy is confidential, with a few important exceptions required by law and professional ethics. Your therapist will review the details with you before or during your first session, including:

  • Privacy protections — Your clinical information is kept confidential within the limits of the law
  • Limits of confidentiality — Including situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, and certain court orders
  • Records and communication — How your information is stored and how to reach your therapist between sessions
  • Professional boundaries — Therapy is a professional relationship; your therapist will explain policies around scheduling, cancellations, and communication

In-Person & Telehealth Options

We offer therapy at our Newtown, CT office and via secure telehealth for clients in Connecticut. Before your first session, your therapist will confirm which format you'll use and share any logistics you need — such as office directions, parking, or telehealth setup. For telehealth, you'll need a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. Your therapist can help you troubleshoot basic setup questions before your appointment.
