What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy — sometimes called marriage or relationship counseling — involves both partners meeting with a trained therapist to address patterns affecting the relationship. Sessions focus on understanding each partner's perspective, improving communication, and developing practical strategies for conflict, connection, and decision-making. Therapy is not about assigning blame; it is about building skills and understanding that help the relationship move forward.

Who It Helps & Common Reasons to Seek Support

Couples therapy can help partners at any stage — dating, engaged, married, or considering separation.

Common reasons couples seek support include:

  • Frequent arguments or communication breakdowns
  • Trust issues, infidelity, or difficulty rebuilding connection
  • Parenting disagreements or blended family stress
  • Intimacy or emotional distance
  • Major life transitions such as relocation, job change, or empty nesting
  • Premarital counseling and strengthening foundations
  • Deciding whether to stay together and how to move forward respectfully

Our Approach

Our couples therapists use collaborative, evidence-informed methods adapted to your relationship. Therapy may include:

  • Identifying negative interaction cycles and healthier alternatives
  • Communication and conflict de-escalation skills
  • Exploring underlying needs, expectations, and attachment patterns
  • Rebuilding trust and emotional connection when both partners are willing
  • Creating practical agreements and next steps you can use between sessions

Format, Sessions & Practical Details

Couples sessions are typically 50–60 minutes. We offer in-person sessions at our Newtown, CT office and secure telehealth for couples located in Connecticut. Both partners usually attend together; your therapist may occasionally recommend individual sessions when appropriate. See Fees & Insurance for coverage information.
